It used to be it was impossible to think of skateboarding and video games and not immediately think about Activision's "Tony Hawk" franchise. So many publishers have tried and failed to match the arcade-style action in the Activision games, but EA's "Skate" may just knock old Tony off his pedestal.

A great deal of the credit is owed to the game's control scheme, which has most of the controls in the two analog sticks and the triggers (as opposed to button-mashing, or a combination of button-mashing and stick). The left stick controls the movements of your skater. The right stick controls your board moves and tricks. Things are more fluid and fun.

Career mode does feature a bizarre story of sorts. It begins with you getting hit by a bus and having to go in for much plastic surgery (thus explaining in a realistic yet creepy way why you are able to pick the physical attributes of your skater a la "The Sims"). After the bandages come off, the game then takes a page from EA's "SSX" snowboarding franchise and has you completing different tasks to get your photo in a skateboarding magazine. Get good enough and you'll eventually compete in big competitions like the X Games.

There are also so free-roaming challenges and you can pretty much skate all around the city without any load times. It's fairly impressive given the amount of detail in the city.

Where "Skate" loses its wheels is in online play. With five other gamers stuck vying for time on the cement playground with you, it becomes less a game of skating and more one akin to bumper cars. While the collisions are initially spectacular to watch, you'll grow frustrated with it. It is something that is easily fixed in the sequel and based on the quality of gameplay in career mode, "Skate" deserves a second romp.

Less than a month into his new venture, Joey Hambuchen of Conway is excited, or stoked, about how the turnout has been at the Good Wheel Skate Park.

Opened on Aug. 13, Hambuchen said people have traveled to Central Arkansas' premiere indoor skating facility from all over the state.

"We've had people come from Fayetteville, Russellville, Jacksonville it's traveling by word of mouth pretty quickly," Hambuchen said. "It's been great. Everybody has been so positive about how they like the park. And the parents really seem to like it because they can drop their kids off at a supervised environment."

Admission to the park, which is open seven days a week from 2-10 p.m., is $10 plus tax for the full day. Monthly passes (31 days) can be purchased for $65 plus tax.

Parents of skaters under the age of 18 are required to sign a liability waiver before the kids can skate, Hambuchen said.

The waivers can be either filled out and signed at the park or underage skaters can bring in a notarized waiver obtained from a previous visit.
Skaters under the age of 18 will also be required to wear a helmet.

Hambuchen said the park will also be available for private parties and other activities, such as skate competitions. He also hopes to attract skating demos from professional skaters as they tour through the South and Midwest.

The park is located on Harkrider, just south of Dave Ward Drive.

Give young people some place to call home

To the best of my knowledge, Rod Stewart first sang those words in the late 1980s, sometime around 1988. All my research shows he wrote the song with Jim Cregan and Kevin Savigar.

I never really liked Rod Stewart that much, although I can point you to no less than three women my basic age who would be all aflutter should he come through town and need a lift to Wal-Mart for some hair products.

But today we will talk about being young. There are purists out there who would say that rather than using Stewart's "Forever Young" song lyrics, I should have used words from Bob Dylan's song of the same name.

Maybe, friends, but more people will recall the Stewart song, so sue me.

I was thinking about what it's like to be young this last week. I am now beyond that time frame in my own personal existence, but I do remember my youth.

I grew up in this town, which is almost completely true. I actually was more a product of a mixture of Valley Springs Schools and my suburban Bellefonte home, but Harrison was the town we all called home after our own fashion.

As a boy, I did what many rural boys do. I hunted and fished with family members and learned to drive at a fairly early age.

Driving, to us, was the chance for freedom. We could go anywhere and do anything we wanted once behind the wheel. But, for a few of my friends and me, there were other wheels that came into play before we could drive. They were smaller wheels, but they held forth the promise of other freedoms we couldn't get anywhere else.

Those were the wheels on a skateboard.

Yes, I was a skateboarder as a boy. I could even do a handstand on a skateboard, or at least I could long enough to get my confidence up and acquire the following scars and cuts after I went down.

There were no places for us to go to ride skateboards, though. So, we made up our own little skate parks of sorts.

Once, just after the mall here in Harrison opened, I took my skateboard with me when my Mom was shopping. She had several stores to visit and I'd decided I would ride on the ultra-smooth surfaces of the concourse while she shopped.

I was careful and didn't scare anyone as I casually skated around the floor. But suddenly, as I pushed my way along the walkways, I heard an ominous voice on the mall's intercom, which said:

"Get out of here with that skateboard!"

I did as I was told and suffered at least a little parental wrath afterward, although not enough to keep me from trying to ride other places as well.

When I was finally old enough to drive, I would go down to Valley Springs and meet friends where we would ride on the sidewalks surrounding the school.

I still have one scar from one of those trips that reminds me of the hubris I felt on a skateboard, which is one lesson I learned the hard way indeed.

I have since left those days behind me. I have tried to ride a skateboard in my waning years, but I find my balance has gone the way of all flesh in much the same way as my eyesight.

And I don't heal as quickly as I once did, which is a major part of my decision to remain on fairly stable ground without wheels of any kind beneath me.

But one of the things I always noticed during my youth was that unless you were involved in a team sport of some kind, your activities were considered less than optimal.

Sure, there were other options than team sports, but they were ones upon which the powers that be frowned, such as driving fast, doing drugs or just getting into generally felonious mischief.

And, oddly enough, the grown-ups in town regularly bemoaned the fact that young people wanted to move away as soon as possible and not return, meaning there would be few young people to carry on the traditions of small town Arkansas.

Just this past week, city officials began talking about the future of a skate park on the municipal parking lot at the corner of Walnut Street and Central Avenue.

The general consensus was that a few older youth were down there harassing younger skateboarders and causing problems.

That's the way of the world - from Rainbow Tribe members to Hells Angels riders - some goobers can ruin the whole thing for everyone when they start trouble.

Not all children are cut out for organized sports. Some need independence in order to develop their own lives, and skateboarding is one of those individual sports where the rider competes against his/her own best/last performance as well as other riders.

What I am saying is, let's give them a chance. Let's see if a truly worthy skate park could bring as many visitors to town as a soccer or baseball tournament.

And that just might make the young people of the community want to stay around and raise their own children here.

Who knows? It just might make us all feel a little younger in the process; maybe we'll be forever young.

Just stumbled upon a forum provided by the Log Cabin. Somebody apparently made a comment about the upcoming skate park...which I'm guessing is the GoodWheel skatepark.

What's up with all the jabber. I mean please....'a place where vandals can aggregate'...

Funny word choice...but where is it written that skateboarders are vandals or that vandals are skateboarders. That's just dumb.

Personally, I'd rather be run into by a skateboarder in the parking lot than one of the myriad of cellphone attached drivers of vehicles that can squash me like a bug.

What is Skitching?

Skitching (i.e. "ski-hitching" or "skate-hitching") is the act of hitching a ride on the rear bumper of a car when there is ice or slick snow on the roads. This can also be done with a skateboard or roller skates in urban areas where there is no ice or snow. In addition, skitching can be performed on a bicycle.

The skitched vehicle can either be aware of their load or unaware. When the skitcher is discovered by a previously unaware driver, the driver's reaction is sometimes negative, sometimes positive. It could lead to the driver attempting to "shake" the skitcher, or accelerate faster than the skitcher can handle.

Bicycle skitching can be performed by coming up to speed with the vehicle and holding a part of the rear of the vehicle with the closest hand while steering the bike with the other hand. Skitching can also be initiated by gripping the vehicle while both cyclist and vehicle are at a standstill. Extreme acceleration often leads to forces greater than the cyclist can safely steer under and the cyclist must release their grip. Bicycle skitching is most often seen being utilized by bicycle messengers.

Cautionary tale: 'Skitching' not worth the ride

A Lisle teen who suffered severe head trauma after a skateboarding accident recently was released to a rehabilitation facility Aug. 15.

Eric Field, 14, was riding his skateboard Aug. 1 while holding onto a moving vehicle, a practice commonly called "skitching," when he fell and cracked his skull. Field was not wearing a helmet and was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

"He should make a fairly meaningful recovery," said Michael Iwanicki, the trauma director and co-director of critical care at Good Samaritan. He was also Field's critical care doctor.

Field was admitted to the hospital with skull fractures and bleeding, swelling and bruising in and around the brain.

For the next few weeks, doctors said Field will stay in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, where he will work on daily living activities such as brushing his teeth, combing his hair and getting dressed. But he already has made significant progress. After spending several days in a drug-induced coma, Field is able to perform functions such as writing and reciting his name and the date.

"It's been a crazy couple of days," said Joe Field, Eric's father.

Joe, a 55-year-old truck driver, said Eric ate his first meal the morning of Aug. 14 and has full motor control. Even though Field was lucky, Joe doesn't want people to think they can participate in this kind of risky behavior and be on their feet again in a few weeks. He said his son was extremely lucky.

According to Illinois state statute, clinging to vehicles while "riding upon any bicycle, coaster, roller skates, sled or toy" is prohibited.

Joe said he is planning on pressing charges against the 18-year-old driver of the car.

"If you've got a driver's license, you're responsible for everyone in that car," he said. "Anyway you look at it, that conduct (driving a skitcher) is reckless."

In the past few weeks, doctors at Good Samaritan said they have seen four accidents involving skitching and car surfing. All of the victims were adolescent males. One victim died, and Good Samaritan neurosurgeon Stavros Maltezos said there is a good chance another will stay in a permanent vegetative state.

"The common denominator is testosterone," Maltezos said.

Iwanicki said there are 50,000 skateboarding-related injuries every year, 15,000 of which are severe in nature.

Iwanicki said this summer has been especially bad for these types of accidents. Good Samaritan is launching a helmet safety program to reach teens and prevent risky behavior. The program, "From street to vert ... brains need buckets," will kick off with a free helmet distribution event Sept. 8.

Maltezos said the severity of Field's injuries could have been prevented with a helmet, which is designed to absorb the impact from the fall. Instead, Field's skull took the impact.

With or without a helmet, holding onto cars while riding a skateboard don't mix, authorities have said.

Commentary: Olympic skateboard a good idea or not?

PORTLAND - Bob Burnquist's eyes glow when he recalls grasping the Olympic torch.

He carried it briefly once through his native Brazil, holding it aloft while riding his skateboard. It spurred emotions in him about the power of sport and the Olympic Games' ability to unite the world during difficult times.

But add skateboarding to the Olympic program?

The suggestion steers Burnquist toward a new range of emotions. He instantly grows skeptical. He wonders whether the clash of cultures can work together. Burnquist questions the International Olympic Committee's motivations, whether the forces pulling his sport toward those games truly understand it, and whether the movement to shoehorn skateboarding into the 2012 London games is in the sport's best interests.

"I'd rather it not happen than happen the wrong way," Burnquist said Thursday after finishing his preliminary run on the vert ramp at the AST Dew Tour in the Rose Garden. "They need us more than we need them. And that's OK. But we need to figure this out."

It's a unique position for a sport that has thrived for years on its independence and has grown exponentially - and effortlessly - in the last decade. Big money sponsors, corporations and television networks have flocked to its events, spurring video game franchises, prime-time broadcasts, swelling earning potential for athletes and expanding the sport's audience despite the lack of a governing body to steer its direction.

Now the IOC is trying to snag a piece of that popularity, hoping it can draw younger viewers to bolster the Summer Games' sagging ratings. They're so eager to add the sport that the IOC approached the International Cycling Union this summer to discuss adding the sport in 2012 under the cycling banner.

Many question what it would mean for skateboarding.

"It's touchy," said Paul Zitzer, a former pro skateboarder who now works as a television analyst for NBC's broadcasts of the Dew Tour. "I think it always will be just because skateboarding, a lot of people who have been in it for a long time - in the industry, work for the magazines, work for the companies, run the companies - when they started skateboarding, it was like this rebellious thing. The closer it gets to being an Olympic thing, the further it gets away from what it was."

Older skaters remember "what it was" as a sport that had little in common with - or need for - the Olympics.

When Zitzer started skating 22 years ago, the sport was a grass roots activity that preferred its underground status. There were no Fortune 500 companies like Toyota sponsoring events in major venues. And unlike the Olympics - with its national network broadcasts - exposure for skateboarders was limited to videos produced by skateboard companies. The culture remained fiercely independent and strayed from the mainstream.

But the last decade produced significant changes. ESPN's X-Games has given the sport mainstream exposure. Tony Hawk - a legend in the sport since the 1980s - developed his own clothing line sold in major stores like Kohl's, and a video game franchise. Shaun White, who won an Olympic Gold medal in snowboarding last year and leads the Dew Tour's vert ramp competitions, has shot commercials for American Express and Hewlett Packard.

Many view the Olympics as an inevitable step in that evolution. But the irony escapes few.

Television ratings for the Olympics has dropped while skating's popularity has erupted. And the IOC's eagerness to add a sport that can attract young audiences - a demographic that would satisfy their sponsors and television partners - has helped fuel skepticism in the skateboarding community. Some question whether skateboarding needs the Olympics, producing an ongoing controversy on both sides.

On one end are the cautious skeptics like Burnquist, who question the proposal to place skating under the Cycling Union's banner and whether it would spark turf battles over the fundamental differences between the sports. Entering the Olympics also raises the potential that the sport could start losing its independence. Without a governing body, who will look out for the skateboarders?

But those on the other end see tremendous benefits: More exposure for athletes, and possibly increased sponsorships. Increased exposure could help awareness in the sport, which could lead to the development of more public skate parks. The business and development potential is enormous.

But throughout that spectrum of concerns are an endless series of questions. The momentum appears destined to carry it toward Olympic recognition, but few know how it will shape the sport.

The possibility has created a mixture of emotions: excitement, uncertainty and anxiety. Nobody is certain what to expect from a future that moves skateboarding from extreme to mainstream.

Bay College and the world's biggest skateboard...

Bay College students are hoping to get a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records.

They've built what they think is the world's biggest skateboard.

How big? Try just over 31 feet long.

"When it all comes together, you see things," explains Shaun Anderson, the project leader. "It started from a regular board, to the deck, the trucks, to the tires, and then it came into something that looks like a skateboard."

To qualify as a world record, it has to turn and operate just like the real thing.

The students are now sending an application to London in hopes of beating a group in new York that's contending for the same record.

Incidentally, Governor Granholm Friday took a brief ride on the gigantic skateboard.

Who is Kevin Long?

Kevin 'Spanky' Long (b. August 6, 1984 in Oak Park, California) is a professional skateboarder. The nickname 'Spanky' comes from his older brother's friends who apparently , who compared him to Spanky from the Little Rascals. Long skates goofy, standing with his right foot forward on the skateboard.

In 2003, Long won the Tampa Am contest in Tampa, Florida. In the same year he turned pro for Baker Skateboards. In 2005 he received his own pro model shoe, the KSL1, with Emerica. Kevin's second shoe named the "KSL D0S" is out now. Long has appeared in the Baker 3 video which was the recipient of the Best Video award at the 8th Annual Transworld Skateboarding Awards.He was also featured in Emerica's "This is Skateboarding" and "Kids in Emerica" which both show his incredible talent for skateboarding.

Chris Cole (born March 10, 1982 in Statesville, North Carolina), is a professional skateboarder. Cole currently resides in Levittown, Pennsylvania, along with his wife and his new born son Wyett.

Chris Cole is known for his punk style and theme, even when he is skating. He is a committed member of the Zero Skateboards team and the Fallen Footwear team, along side with Jamie Thomas.

He has the recent notable achievement of tre-flipping (360 flip) the Wallenberg four (a set of four very large stairs at Wallenberg High School, measuring 6 feet high, and 18 feet long, in San Francisco). Other tricks performed by Cole include, a backside 270 ollie to frontside noseblunt on the now skate-stopped Beverly Hills High School 9 stair rail. He also tuck-knee grabbed down and S/S (switch stance) frontside 180'ed the Hollywood High School 16 stair, S/S frontside flipped,backside 360'd and backside flipped the Love Gap, as well as having backside 360 ollie kickflipped down the Pit big 4 in Australia. She skated with the Z-Boys in the 70's and was the only female member. She appeared in the movie Dogtown and Z-Boys.

Peggy studied environmental biology and received a Bachelor of Arts in painting from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Today, she is involved with many activities such as yoga, skateboarding, rock climbing and has been surfing for over 24 years. She has traveled to Fiji, Mexico, South Africa, French Polynesia, Indonesia, Japan, and Tonga, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, and Costa Rica for surfing and as an environmental activist. Enfield -- Close calls between motorists and skateboarders this summer have prompted town officials to reconsider the sport's place in the community. They've drafted the town’s first skateboard ordinance and discussed construction of a skateboard park.

Enfield Selectwoman Rebecca Stewart called the park a long-range project, still in the conceptual stage, but said a vote on the ordinance could come on Monday at the Selectboard's next regular meeting.

“The ordinance really needs to happen soon, so we can avoid any tragic accidents,” said Stewart, who said she has personally “experienced young people coming down the road and not yielding to traffic.”

While the wording on the new law has not been finalized, Enfield Police Chief Richard Crate said it will likely prohibit riding skateboards on a narrow stretch of Route 4A north of the Shaker Bridge, as well as on several hills in town, including Shaker Hill Road, Lockehaven Road and Jones Hill Road. It might also consign skateboarders to the sidewalk in the village area around Main Street. Crate said he has received complaints of skateboarders riding after dark and not yielding to vehicle traffic.

Other towns in the Upper Valley, including Lebanon and Hanover, have passed skateboarding regulations, but the proposed ordinance would be a first for Enfield, which Crate says has an increasing number of skateboarders. “We've seen a lot more skateboarders lately,” Crate said. “We want to make sure the kids are safe.”

On Main Street, where skateboarders occasionally congregate on hot summer days, business owner Scott Ibey cautioned against restricting skateboards from roads without giving kids another place to go. Ibey, 31, who owns Dragon's Gate Tattoo Studio, grew up skateboarding in California, and said he still occasionally rides his board down the road to the post office at lunchtime. He said riding on the sidewalk is impractical, because it is made of bricks, which catch on skateboard wheels.

“I've never seen the kids around here destroying anything,” Ibey said. He conceded that they might pose a “slight traffic hazard,” but noted that Main Street is one of only a few smooth and flat places to ride in town. “There's no other flat area in town but downtown,” he said.

Crate said he was sympathetic to skateboarders who want to use the roadways, noting, “Far too often we get in the opinion that the roads are for automobiles. They're not. They're for horses, walkers, and yes, skateboards.” But he also cited what he called “an issue of disrespect” on behalf of some skateboarders.

“They're right in the middle of the road,” he said.

He called the ordinance a good compromise between the current lawlessness and an outright ban on skateboarding, which, he said, was also discussed.

Stewart said the town hopes to build a destination park for skateboarders, and Town Manager Steve Schneider has looked at the skate parks in Lebanon and Canaan as possible models. Stewart said the Selectboard has discussed locating the park at Shaker Recreation Park on Route 4A, though she added that other suggestions are welcome.

“We're kind of in the beginning stages of that,” she said.

At Huse Memorial Park yesterday, skateboarder Samuel Calfy, 16, who was tooling around on the concrete floor of a small picnic pavilion, said he would be thrilled if the town built a skateboard park. “All the skaters who skate here would want to skate on a skate park,” he said. “Just grabbing random objects like a trash can and ollieing them, we get pretty bored.” (An “Ollie” is a trick in which a skateboarder pops up in the air with the skateboard.)

Calfy said he goes to Lebanon's skateboard park on Glen Road whenever he can get a ride, “but I can't walk there.” By comparison, he said, he knows plenty of skateboarders from town who take advantage of skateboarding features at Shaker Recreation Park.

“I'd learn to skate if we had a park,” said Chelsea Wheeler, 15, who was sitting in the pavilion with Calfy and friend Brianna Turner, 17, yesterday.

Lebanon Assistant Director of Recreation Kevin Talcott said that finding a location was the toughest part of building the Lebanon park. When the city allocated money for a series of ramps and skateboarding features, shortly after passing its own skateboarding ordinance four years ago, Talcott said, “The old saying ‘Not in my backyard' was going around.”

Talcott said residents feared the legal responsibility of a town-run skate park, but Schneider said, in Enfield, the liability would be no greater than that of the town beach on Lake Mascoma. Once a location is settled, Talcott said, the town will have to decide whether the features at the park will be made of expensive, but durable, concrete or the less expensive wood. Schneider said he would seek donated materials from skateboard companies to help defray the costs of the project, which Talcott said would vary widely depending on the size and scope of the park.

Stewart said Enfield has yet to work out funding and legal concerns for the park, but Crate said those obstacles would be easier to tackle than any potential accident between skateboarders and cars. “Having a kid on the road instead, in traffic, is creating another situation,” he said.

Crate said the proposed skateboarding ordinance would impose “realistic consequences” for skaters who ride in roads, such as confiscating skateboards, rather than issuing tickets.

Calfy said he knows some teenagers who have already had their skateboards taken away temporarily, or received citations, for dangerous riding. “I'm careful,” he said. “I grab my board when a car passes by.”

Cara-Beth Burnside, nicknamed "CB", is a pioneer of women's professional skateboarding and snowboarding from Orange, California and ranks amongst the top female athletes in these sports in the world.

As a skateboarder, Burnside has won more than 16 titles in competitions such as the X Games, All Girl Skate Jam, Vans Triple Crown, Slam City Jam and Soul Bowl, and in 2004 she was named Female Vert Skater of the Year by World Cup Skating.

As a snowboarder, she was on the first United States Olympic snowboarding team at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, where she placed 4th.[2] She has also won titles at the snowboarding Grand Prix, the X Games and the Vans Triple Crown.

In 1998 she received gold medals for both the snowboarding halfpipe event in the 1998 Winter X Games and the skateboard vert event at the 2003 Summer X Games. She is the only woman to have received gold medals at both competitions.

Robert Dean Silva Burnquist (born October 10, 1976 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), better known as Bob Burnquist, is a professional skateboarder and a Christian Spiritist[1]. He was born to a Swedish-American father and a Brazilian mother. He became adept at skateboarding in São Paulo starting at age 11 and turned pro at age 14. As an adult he emigrated to North America; he holds dual citizenship from Brazil and the U.S.

The biggest competition that he has won was the vert contest at the 2001 X-Games. Before his final run- the last run of the event- Burnquist was sitting in second place behind two-time defending champion Bucky Lasek. Burnquist produced a flawless run, including multiple tricks that had never been seen before, and as a result, were unnamed. During the run, commentator Tony Hawk went hoarse and nearly lost his voice while screaming in disbelief. Burnquist was rewarded with a 98, the highest score ever given in skateboard vert.

Burnquist's speciality is switch stance skateboarding. He has always tried to find new ways to make his tricks more creative and more difficult. He has a signature trick called "one-footed smith grind". Burnquist has also been featured in the hit video game, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and appeared in all of its sequels. However, he was not featured in Pro Skater 3 because of license restrictions, as he was featured in another video game, X-Games Skateboarding, during that year. He is again, however, a featured skater in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series.

Burnquist has also won a gold medal on the 2005 X-Games Best Trick vert contest.

Burnquist is the only skater to go over a loop ramp with a gap in it (OP King Of Skate) Not only was the loop gapped, but Bob also did the gap switch. He is also the first skater to go through a loop while riding switch stance, and the first to go all the way around a full pipe just by pumping up to speed inside it. In 2000, Burnquist won the X-Games' best trick contest with his famous fakie 5-0, fakie Kickflip out off of the grind bar.

Bob Burnquist completed a BASE jump after attempting a world class rail slide into the Grand Canyon. The first attempt nearly cost Burnquist his life after he missed the rail and fell out of control before regaining himself and successfully deploying his parachute. After some adjustments to the take-off ramp his second attempt went off flawlessly. This stunt was shown in an episode of the television show Stunt Junkies.

He lives with professional skateboarder Jen O'Brien, and their daughter Lotus, in Vista, California, where he has a world-renowned vert ramp in his backyard. It has been skated by dozens of famous skateboarders, including Colin McKay, Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, and Lincoln Ueda, and has been featured in hundreds of magazines and videos, including Tony Hawk's Trick Tips and Thrasher Magazine. Burnquist's latest addition to his backyard skate-park is one of the world's few permanent Mega Ramp.

Og de Souza is a professional skateboarder from Olinda, Brazil. He is notable from other skateboarders in that he skateboards using only his hand. Born with a condition which caused his legs to stop developing at a young age, Oggy originally learned to skateboard as a way to get around, much like most people use a wheel chair. Many years of skateboarding under his belt (Og started around 1988)[2], Souza began to incorporate the tricks of his contemporaries in his skateboarding, having to adapt them all to be done using the arms instead of the legs in a sitting position on the board.

Og de Souza is a contemporary of skateboarders Bob Burnquist and Nilton Neves. Burnquist features Og in a the documentary "The Reality of Bob Burquist". As Burnquist puts it, Souza became a skateboarder "to get from point a to point b".

Tony Alva (born September 2, 1957, in Santa Monica, California, United States) is one of the original Z-Boys and is considered to be one of the most influential skateboarders of all time.

The level of aggression with which Alva skated was in stark contrast to the traditional style of the era which was still based around tricks formulated in the 1960s . Alva and the other Z-Boys were among the first to bring skating empty pools into the mainstream. In these early days, it was noted that Alva was hitting the lip so hard that he was actually taking off, hence Alva is often credited for the first recorded aerials, a frontside air, although Alva himself claimed that George Orton was the first to perform aerials (Skateboarder magazine, July, 1978).

In 1977, at age nineteen, Alva shunned the major skate companies to form his own skateboard company, Alva Skates. Alva's company was the first company ever run and owned by a skateboarder as well as being one of the first to use layered maple plywood for the skate decks. The same year he was voted 'skateboarder of the year' in Skateboarder Magazine's readers' poll and he set the Guinness World Record for barrel jumping [1].

Alva is featured in the documentary on Venice Beach skate culture Dogtown and Z-Boys which was fictionalized into the 2005 feature film Lords of Dogtown. He also played the role of Tony Bluetile in the 1978 film, Skateboard: The Movie.

Tony Alva recently signed a three year deal with Vans shoes and his new pro model high top was released in 2006. He is also sponsored by Independent Trucks and Vestal Watches.

Tony also played bass in the band The Skoundrelz, which featured ex-Suicidal Tendencies members Mike Dunnigan and Mike Ball as well as ex-member of Wasted Youth Dave Hurricane.

In December 2005, Tony Alva opened two stores in Southern California locations. She was the on-camera host for the girls competition at the West 49 Canadian Open in Hamilton in September 2006. She is also featured skater in the video game Tony Hawk's Project 8.

Lyn-Z got into skateboarding after her brother, Tyler, bought her a membership at the Encinitas YMCA when she was six years old. Her mother often travels with her. Adams Hawkins' skateboards bear her trademark, a message to her late father.

Warren Edward Bolster (born 11 June 1947, Arlington, Virginia - died 6 September 2006, Mokuleia, Hawaii) was arguably the most influential skateboard photographer during the mid-1970s rebirth of skateboarding.

He was responsible for reviving Skateboarder Magazine, considered "the bible" of skate magazines, and his skateboarding photojournalism helped popularize and define the wheeled sport during its explosive rebirth in the 1970s. Later in his career, he became an accomplished surfboard photographer in Hawaii.

His father was a U.S. foreign service officer and traveled extensively as a diplomat. Bolster moved with his parents and sister to Sydney, Australia in 1963. It was here that he learned to surfboard and skateboard for the first time, in 1965.

Bolster had been interested in cameras and photography from an early age. This was especially nurtured by his parents' regular slide-shows of family holidays and the many hand-down cameras they gave to him.

In 1967, he moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida, attended Brevard Community College and earned a reputation as one of the state's top surfers. He also began photographing surfing while in Florida.

By 1970, Bolster had migrated to San Diego and made skateboards out of old water skis to ensure there was "a surfboard-like alternative for the few days lacking surf," he later recalled.

In 1972, he started to be published in and became associate editor at Surfer Magazine, from 1976-77. During his time at Surfer Magazine, he was given the task of resurrecting Skateboarder Magazine by Steve Pezman, at the time publisher and editor of Surfer. Skateboarder Magazine had released only four quarterly issues in 1964-65, and then ceased publication. When the skateboard craze subsided, the magazine was dropped due to low sales.

In 1976, with the advent of the the Urethane wheel revolution in skateboarding, which provided greater traction and speed, Bolster had six months to get Skateboarder Magazine running again. As an associate editor, he teamed up with Kurt Ledterman, the other associate editor at Surfer Magazine. Secretary Chris Maxwell (nicknamed Max Criswell by Kurt) made the final member of a trio that would become the re-creators of Skateboarder Magazine.

Photographically, Bolster was among the first to use fish-eye lenses, motor-drive sequences and strobes while documenting California's skateboarding culture. Pioneer professional skateboarder Tony Hawk said the magazine was the only one worth reading at the time. "The pictures were always dreamy and left me full of disbelief…. If it weren't for SkateBoarder, I would have never realized what was really possible on my four-wheeled plank," Hawk said in the book The Legacy of Warren Bolster: Master of Skateboard Photography.

Bolster remained a staff photographer for Surfer Magazine until 1992.

He moved to Hawaii in 1978, where he established himself as an accomplished and widely published free-lance surf photographer. Bolster was constantly on the lookout for new angles, shooting from helicopters and often using a deck-mounted camera to get spectacular photos from behind the surfer, or photos from in front of the surfer’s board.

As a free-lance photographer, he often struggled financially between assignments. He was known for putting himself dangerously close to the action he was photographing, often colliding with his subjects or their speeding platforms. He had endured at least a dozen surgeries and many broken bones participating in and documenting surfing activities. As a result, Bolster battled chronic pain and addiction to a painkiller.

"I almost destroyed myself to give a larger life to the sport," he wrote in The Legacy of Warren Bolster: Master of Skateboard Photography, a 2004 book.

He also suffered from long bouts of depression. Nonetheless, despite his health issues, Bolster remained on the cutting edge of surf photography.

Nine days before his death, Bolster was injured when his car was rear-ended in a serious collision. He died at the age of 59 on September 6, 2006, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Stacy Peralta, a filmmaker, featured Bolster's work in Riding Giants (2004) and Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001).

Bolster's sister, Janet Barnes Tramonte, was the administrative assistant to U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist for many years.

Who is Mark Gonzales?

Mark Gonzales (born June 1, 1969), also known as "The Gonz", is a professional skateboarder and artist. He is known in the skateboarding world as the pioneer of street skateboarding, currently skateboarding's most popular form.

Gonzales arrived on the skateboarding scene at age 15 with a more modern approach to street skating and made the cover of Thrasher Magazine's November 1984 issue, riding a board from Alva, with which he was sponsored at the time. He was soon to be picked up for sponsorship by a new company with big ideas,called Vision Skateboards.

In 1986, the first major gap was cleared with Gonzales's ollie at Embarcadero in San Francisco(see Thrasher, September '86). So historical was this incident for skateboarding, it became forever known as the "Gonz Gap" and helped make Embarcadero a popular location for skateboarders. Also in 1986, Gonzales, together with Natas Kaupas, was the first person to skate handrails, thus cementing his contribution to street skating's early to intermediate stages. He became one of the first people to skate switch stance in 1987.

Gonzales went on to further influence skateboarding as it modernized with the 1991 video Video Days, by Blind skateboards (a skateboard company he created around 1989). The name Blind was an intentional slight to his old sponsor, Vision. And in 1993, Gonzales was the first to kickflip his namesake, the Gonz Gap at Embaracadero.

Gonzales has also established a parallel career as an artist, having shown at the Alleged Gallery in New York and various galleries worldwide. He recently had an exhibit featuring collaborative works with Christian Hosoi at The Journal gallery in New York City. He also designs the 'Gonzo Cuntry' clothing line available in Japan and t-shirts for UARM. Some of his fans include Donald Trump and Sean Combs, both of whom have collections of his artwork. [1]

He has been in a few movies, including Harmony Korine's cult film Gummo, where he wrestles a chair.

He has published a book called Broken Poems and in 2006 he was awarded the Legend Award by Transworld Skateboarding.

In 2007 he published a skateboarding video called Gnar Gnar that was shot with an old VHS camcorder and was limited to only 1000 VHS copies.

Most recently, Mark Gonzales was also featured in the music video, "West Coast" by Jason Schwartzman's (Rushmore's Max Fischer) band, Coconut Records. This was a skate video sequence originally filmed in 1998 at a German Museum, but was edited and synced for this music video with his permission.

He is also a published author, artist, and poet and has published several books including social problems, high tech poetry, broken dreams and broken poems.

Who is "Ollie"... the skateboarding trick....named after?

To execute an ollie...the front foot is moved slightly more towards the center of the board. The skateboarder jumps up, and as they are about to take off they kick the tail of the board down. The kick gives the front end of the board upward momentum, and as the tail hits the ground, it rebounds making the board completely airborne. When the board takes off, its nose is much higher off the ground than the tail is. The skateboarder slides their front foot up and forward on the griptape. The movement between the shoe and the board levels the skateboard and takes it further off the ground.

But where did the ollie get its name?

The Ollie is named after Alan Gelfand...aka Ollie...who invented the trick!

Alan Gelfand (born 1963, New York) is the inventor of the ollie, a skateboarding trick.

Gelfand moved from New York to Hollywood, Florida with his family in 1968. Alan "Ollie" Gelfand started skateboarding in 1974 after his father bought him his first skateboard. In 1976 he won the South Florida Skateboard Championships. This was the year skateboard parks started to appear with the very first one opening up in Port Orange, Florida in early 1976. In 1977 Hollywood would get its own park called Skateboard USA. This park with its imperfect walls was atypical of the first-generation skate parks and it was the over-vertical sections of the big bowl which played a significant role in Gelfand's 1977 development of the ollie. Gelfand's "no-hands aerial" was dubbed an "ollie" by friends Kevin Peterson, Craig Snyder, Jeff Duerr, and Scott Goodman using the nickname they had given Gelfand only months earlier.

During the summer of 1977 California skateboarder Stacy Peralta visited the Solid Surf Skate Park in Fort Lauderdale where he met Gelfand and observed with some disbelief his no-handed aerial. In 1978, after Peralta formed Powell Peralta with skateboard equipment manufacturer George Powell, Gelfand was recruited as the first member of the new team joining Stacy Peralta and Powell's own Ray "Bones" Rodriquez. This team later became known as the legendary Powell Peralta Bones Brigade which included other Florida skaters such as Mike McGill, inventor of the 540 aerial or "McTwist" in 1984, and Rodney Mullen who during the 1980’s grew to become one the of major influences of today's street skating.

Another young Bones Brigade member, Tony Hawk, used the ollie during the early 1980’s as a way to achieve higher air when doing tricks. The ollie soon changed both vert and street skateboarding in revolutionary ways and most skateboard tricks are now based on this maneuver.

In the late 1990’s ollie became an official entry in the Oxford English Dictionary but the origin was listed as unknown. In February 2004 the Oxford English Dictionary rectified the listing giving Alan "Ollie" Gelfand credit as the name and originator behind the 1977 maneuver. In July 2006 the Merriam-Webster followed suit adding Gelfand and his ollie to its dictionary. Gelfand stopped skateboarding in 1981 because of knee injuries, general burn-out and the shutdown of most U.S. skate parks during the previous year.

During the 1980's Gelfand turned to racing cars driving Volkswagens exclusively and winning many of the Sports Car Club of America SCCA races. In 1987 Gelfand won the World Karting Association, or WKA Grand National Championship. From there he went on to win four 24-hour races driving VW's he custom-built in a shop called "Ollieprep". In 2001 Gelfand raced in the Grand Am Cup behind the wheel of a 2000 model Porsche 986 Boxster. Gelfand continued racing for another year placing 3rd in several national competitions.

In 2001 Gelfand returned to skateboarding. In 2002 he opened a venue in Hollywood, Florida called Olliewood which features a 48 foot bowl built by the Team Pain crew. He also owns a Volkswagen dealership called "Volkswagen Depot" in Hollywood, Florida.

Why is Skateboarding Demonized?

With all the news about the skateboarding incident in Hot Springs...where skateboarders where deemed so offensive to the public good that officers needed to tackle and chokehold them into submission... I wonder why some folks view skateboarding as such a threat?

Apparently skateboarders need to be confined, controlled and supervised at all times lest they stray into evil.

I'd think it's just people worried about kids being kids...but other kid activities are not sanctioned so heavily. Last time I checked tossing a football or shooting hoops did not bring the looks of scorn that merely holding a skateboard can bring.

I'd think that statistics must show that violent criminals were heavily into skateboarding...but I don't see that.

So what is it?

Conway Skate Park at the McGee Center

If you're up here in Conway, there is a place to skate over at the new McGee Center...head west down Prince Street headed to Toad Suck Park. The McGee Center is on the left before you get to Hogan.

The park is a fenced in enclosure has a 6 foot mini ramp, a 1/4 pipe, a bank with a spine, launch ramp and rails, and a big load ramp with rails down, a high and low bench, plain fun box, and a fun box that is 2 ft. at one end and 1 ft. at the other. There's also 2 kink rails and another 7 ft box. It's open to roller bladers and skateboarders through the week...and bikes on Sunday.

It's managed by the city, and you have to wear a helmet and they lock it up at dark. It's a lot of metal painted...so it's a slick, fast ride in spots so the helmet is a good thing.

Kanis Park - Skateboard Park in Little Rock, Arkansas

Anyone been to the skate park at Kanis Park in LR? It's located off Rodney Parham and 630 Interstate.

Along with the skate park, there is a softball field, jogging trails, tennis and basketball courts and picnic areas.

The skate park has a rough concrete bowl that is 8ft in the deep end and 3ft on the shallow end. The concrete is slick in areas and makes for a fast ride. Pads and helmets are required since its managed by the Parks Department...but it's skate at your own risk.

Skaters and supporters protest officer's reinstatement

The viral video of a Hot Springs police officer arresting skateboarders hit a Texas man so hard, he came to Arkansas to lead a protest.
More than one-and-a-half million people have now checked out the video of Hot Springs Police Officer Joseph Williams arresting a group of skateboarders. Just this week, Williams was cleared of any wrong doing- saying he did not use excessive force, something not everyone agrees with.

"One individual should not beat children!" That was just one of the lines protesters used Sunday afternoon in Hot Springs. The mother of one of the children in the YouTube video spoke out for the first time Sunday and wanted to get out a message of fairness. "I've seen police that on, that do drug busts and house raids and things of this sort that no one is choked, " says the mother, who did not give FOX16 her name.

So Jason Waite, a Texan, organized Sunday's protest where the young and old, and skaters and non-skaters joined together against what they are calling police brutality. "This is a unified front for peace and to express our civil rights and to bring out the truth and hopefully seek some conflict resolution, " says Waite.

While Waite does not even live in Arkansas, he says the power of the Internet makes this a global issue. There is even someone on Ebay trying to sell the uncut, complete video. It is the only copy of the actual tape, which promises to show all of the day's events leading up to the arrests. The starting bid is one-thousand dollars, so far there are no takers.

But the interest in this case is high in Hot Springs. The protest even launched a counter-protest of people who say the skateboarders are out of control and running folks off the sidewalk. Their T-shirts show support for the police force. "Especially the police officer who was involved, no, he talks to my children. He's a nice officer, " says Tammi Ferrer who came to counter-protest.

Meanwhile, Waite made sure protesters stayed in straight lines, so they did not get in the way of tourists trying to shop. "We completely support our business 110-percent and we support our police department and our city officials 110-percent, " adds Waite. He also says the skateboarders have nowhere else to skate.

The police supporters say the kids smash into people and shouldn't even be out there without adult supervision.

This is the most viewed sports video on YouTube for the month so far. More than 16-thousand have left comments, so it is sparking debate all across the world.

Skateboarders Protest in Arkansas

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. A protest of the city's reinstatement of a police officer involved in a fracas with skateboarders drew more than two dozen chanting protesters to the scene where the boarders were arrested.

About 25 protesters kept their rides in their hands Sunday as they marched down a Central Avenue sidewalk. They were abiding by a city ordinance that bars skateboarding on downtown sidewalks.

The rule had led to the June 21 arrests of six boarders - two adults and four juveniles - by Officer Joey Williams. The incident attracted national attention after a video made by some of the skateboarders involved was posted on YouTube showing Williams on top of one of the skaters, apparently choking him. It also showed Williams putting two other skateboarders in a headlock.

Williams was suspended, but he was reinstated last week after an internal report concluded that he had used a proper amount of force during the arrests.

Jason C. Waite of Paris, Texas, who said he organized the protest Sunday, said Williams' treatment of the skateboarders was an "atrocity" and the officer used excessive force.

"Police brutality is bad for business!" the boarders chanted.

Hot Springs City Manager Kent Myers watched as the protesters walked along the sidewalk in a single-file line, chanting.

"It's been a very peaceful and orderly protest," he said. "There are a lot of emotions down here."

Police spokesman McCrary Means had no comment on the protest except to say that the skateboarders "have a right to exercise their freedom of speech."

How to do the backstab skateboard trick?

This is a curb lip trick. To learn this trick you should be able to boneless (or at least planting your foot on the ground while holding your board).

1: Ride towards the curb at a moderate speed.

2: Reach down with your front hand and grab the middle of your board.

3: Step off the board with your front foot and snap the tail so you should be in a madonna-ish position.

4: Hop onto the curb, bring your board up with you and plant your back truck on the curb (kinda like a 5-0, but you can let your tail touch the curb) still holding your board.

5: Hold it.

6: To get out, you can pull your board so you land in a tailstall position, or skip the tailstall position and skate away.

NEW MID TRUCK

We did a lot of work on the new MID. Whereas the modifications of the LO were aimed at tightening and honing its basic characteristics, nearly every feature of the MID has been reworked.

LOWER KINGPIN The kingpin is much lower. We took similar steps to what we did for the LO, only everything doubled: First, we effectively shortened the kingpin; second, we dropped the “seat” of the bottom bushing on the baseplate; last, we pulled the “ring” (top-bushing seat) deeper, away from the axle.

SHARPER TURNING This was a two-step process. First, we lengthened the pivot stem, then lowered the height of the pivot cup. This allows for more of a flowing sensation into turns, lessening the emphasis on overall stability.

HEIGHTENED RESPONSE There was a slight decrease in the baseplate’s kingpin-to-pivot distance, meaning the hanger’s loop-to-axle distance was compressed as well. This livens things up a bit.

THICKER BARREL We beefed up the region around the axle: bigger radius, better grind.

MODIFIED LOOK The baseplate is cleaner than it used to be, and the region around the pivot stem (on the hanger) has more clearance with regard to the baseplate/cup.

TIGHTER FIT The fit of the hanger on the bushing was a bit “loose,” which became more noticeable as the bushings and pivot cup compressed and stretched over their natural lifespan. The new precision fit creates a more solid, accurate feel.

The city of NLR pulled out the stops and contracted with Dreamland Skateparks out of Oregon to build a 24,000 sq foot in-ground concrete bowl.

Riverview features a large bowl with about a 10ft. drop and a shallow end thats about 4ft. A street course with large transition ramps,a rainbow rail and two more flat rails. One small pyramid and a few ledges with a kicker and a 3step.

The park is located on River Road off of Pike Avenue/Riverfront Drive (this is where River Road begins); you will travel approximately 1 ½ miles on River Road to Riverview Park.

How to do the endover skateboard trick...

To get them right, put your front foot on the nose of your board and your back foot on the tail of your board.

1) Know how to manual and how to pivot.

2) Going forward, do a 180 NOSE pivot, frontside or backside, your choice, just do not raise the wheels too high and keep your weight nicely centered.

3) Now, do a pivot again, your body has to turn the same way as in the first pivot.

4) Your body has done a full 360 if you did it right.

5) Do it again a few times, if you practice hard, you can combine them with a few 360, 540 or 720 spins.

Hot Springs officer who stopped skateboarders cleared by board

LITTLE ROCK -- A Hot Springs police officer who appeared to choke a skateboarder and put two others into a headlock in a video posted online used the proper amount of force when making his arrests, an internal investigation by police found.

The report, signed by five officers, found officer Joey Williams confronted a situation that "would have overwhelmed any single officer" when he stopped those breaking city ordinance by skateboarding on a downtown sidewalk June 21. However, the investigation faulted Williams for leaving a handcuffed suspect unattended while chasing another youth in the resort town's historic Bathhouse Row.

"I think it was fair," City Manager Kent Myers said. Witnesses "consistently supported the actions of the officer and his efforts to control the situation."

Video of the incident from a business' security cameras show 10 skateboarders rolling down the city sidewalk at a good clip, followed by Williams, who sprints past the last skater. A video taken by skateboarders and later posted to YouTube shows Williams on top of one of the skaters, apparently choking him. The video also showed Williams putting another two skateboarders in a headlock and the officer can later be heard threatening to use pepper spray on a skateboarder lying on the ground.

What remains unclear is what led up to Williams chasing one of the skateboarders down the sidewalk. Myers said it was "premature" to discuss what provoked the incident, saying it would be part of an upcoming court case against those charged in the incident.

Police said they arrested four juveniles and Matthew Jon McCormack, 21, and Skylar Nalls, 19, both of Hot Springs. McCormack faces a misdemeanor battery charge accusing him of pushing or striking a 67-year-old city employee during the melee. Nalls was cited for skateboarding and faces misdemeanor charges of fleeing and obstructing governmental operations.

YouTube shows the video has been viewed more than 1.4 million times since it was posted June 25. Since the YouTube video hit the Internet, Williams has been on administrative leave. Police said he would return Thursday to active duty in the city's downtown.

In their report, the officers described the June 21 event as being "part of a planned participation in a nationwide anti-authority demonstration." However, organizers of Go Skateboarding Day describe the event organized by skateboarding companies as an effort to encourage more people to take up skateboarding.

Those around the country who took part brought video cameras to record their tricks to win contest prizes, said John Bernards, executive director of the International Association of Skateboard Companies, based in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Myers acknowledged the investigation wouldn't have happened without the YouTube video, but said the city had no immediate plans to post its own video response on the site.

"I think it shows the power of the Internet," Myers said.

New video released exclusively to FOX16 shows a new angle of the scuffle between a Hot Springs Police officer and some skate boarders. The video came from the camera of a business along Central Avenue. It actually shows what happened before the scuffle took place.
The eyes of the world have focused on Hot Springs for the past week. The reason, a highly watched video posted on YouTube. It shows Officer Joseph Williams in a scuffle with a group caught skate boarding in a prohibited area along Central Avenue.

After seeing the video lots of people posted comments saying the police officer used excessive force and poor judgement.

"Pick up your skateboards and walk next time I guess and if you really have a problem go to city council and fight it there, but that cop needs to be fired," says one poster.

However, some sided with the officer. "Even at the start of the video the cop says, 'I told you to stop and you didn't' what do you expect when you run away from the police?" adds another poster.

That's what many business owners in the area believe. And they say this video released exclusively to FOX16 News proves their point.

Employees standing out front of the wax museum say the YouTube video doesn't tell the entire story. They were able to catch some of what happened on their own surveillance video and they say it clearly shows the skate boarders disobeying the police officer.

"I seen the cops and about 10 skate boarders come flying by and when they seen the cop they hollered run run and they took off running and the cop was steadily chasing them and he got one down over there," says Tracy Hicks.

Alan Hickman was also on the street that day, he too has a different account of what happened. He says while the YouTube video shows the officer grabbing the kids, what you don't know is he was reacting to them attacking him out of view of the camera. "The kids were way in the wrong, the kids were way out of line, the cop was basically protecting himself," says alan Hickman.

The investigation into Officer Williams' actions is still underway. Police haven't said when it will wrap up.

Skatehead Zed Skate Park in Rogers Arkansas

Skatehead Zed's skatepark is an indoor skate park that was opened back in 2002. It's a 17,000 sq. foot spot with a street skate area and an area for the more experienced for 'big air' rides. The vert is 10 ft and the mini is 6 ft. There are nice transitions ramp to ramp. Nice wood for wallriders too.

Plan B Skateboard

Plan B was formed in 1991 as a superteam, made up of an elite group of skateboard professionals at that time. Plan B was started under Steve Rocco's World Industries empire, and the team was headed by H-Street ex-co-owner Mike Ternasky. The original team was made up of top riders from other companies who all left to form Plan B. It consisted of Danny Way, Matt Hensley, Rodney Mullen, Mike Carroll, Sean Sheffey and Rick Howard, and later added riders Colin McKay, Pat Duffy, Sal Barbier, Ronnie Bertino, Jeremy Wray, and Moses Itkonen. They also took the superteam concept to snowboarding and formed Type A Snowboards.

In 1993 Rick Howard was disgruntled over a wheel invoicing dispute and left Plan B with fellow team riders Mike Carroll, and Sean Sheffey, as well as Megan Baltimore who worked in administration. They went on to form Girl Skateboards.

In 1994, Mike Ternasky was killed in a car accident. Danny Way and Colin McKay took over the team while still maintaining pro status and eventually went independent, separating from World Industries. World Industries in turn formed their own superteam, with the Rodney Mullen headed A-team. With the loss of Ternasky, the team lost focus and Way and McKay pulled the plug on the brand and went on to focus their efforts on their individual professional careers, with Way joining Alien Workshop and McKay first joining Girl Skateboards and later Seek Skateboards.

Reformation
In 2005, Plan B was resurrected by Way and McKay with the financial backing of Syndrome Distribution, using the same formula as the original Plan B, as a superteam of elite skaters picked from other teams. Paul Rodriguez Jr. from Girl, Ryan Gallant from Expedition-One, PJ Ladd from Flip. Way and McKay maintained their roles as team co-owners/pro skaters. Pat Duffy, Darrell Stanton, and Brian Wenning were later added to the pro roster. Ronson Lambert became the team's first amateur. Wieger van Wageningen became the first international team rider after the demise of his previous sponsor, The Firm, with éS Game of SKATE winner Alex Mizurov joining afterwards. Stanton later left the team for Element Skateboards in August 2006. On January 2, 2007, Plan B made a press release to confirm the addition of Ryan Sheckler to the team. On March, 26, 2007 Angel Cardenas from Bakersfield was added to the amateur team.

Plan B debuted their promo film, Live after Death, at the September 2006 Action Sports Retailer Expo. It is viewable online on Plan B's website, downloadable as a Podcast from iTunes, and also included on DVD with the puchase of select Plan B decks. Their first major skateboarding film, Unquestionable, is slated to be released sometime in 2007.

History

The first skateboard
The first skateboard originated sometime in the 1950s and coincided with the initial popularization of surfing in California. The earliest skateboards were homemade and constructed of flat wooden planks attached to roller-skate trucks and wheels. Skateboarding was originally called "sidewalk surfing" and early skaters emulated surfing style and moves. Skateboards may or may not have evolved from "crate scooters." Crate scooters preceded skateboards, and were essentially similar except for having a wooden crate attached to the front, which formed rudimentary handlebars. In the film Back to the Future, Marty McFly is seen commandeering such a scooter from an unsuspecting '50s youth, and ripping the crate off to fashion an improvised skateboard.

In the mid 1960s, skateboarding went mainstream. A number of surfing manufacturers such as Hobie and Makaha started building skateboards that resembled small surfboards and assembling teams to promote their products. The popularity of skateboarding at this time spawned a national magazine, Skateboarder Magazine and the 1965 international championships were broadcast on national television. The growth of skateboarding at this time can also be seen in Makaha's sales figures which quoted $4 million worth of board sales between 1963 and 1965 (Weyland, 2002:28). Yet by 1966 sales had dropped significantly (ibid) and Skateboarder Magazine had stopped publication. Skateboarding's popularity dropped and remained low until the early 1970s.

Second generation
In the early 1970s, Frank Nasworthy started to develop a skateboard wheel made of polyurethane,calling it the 'Cadillac' as he hoped this would convey the smooth ride it afforded the rider. The improvement in traction and performance was so immense that from the wheel's release in 1974 the popularity of skateboarding started to rise rapidly again, and companies wanted to invest more in product development. Many companies started to manufacture trucks (axles) especially designed for skateboarding,and the modern design was reached in 1976 by Tracker Trucks. As the equipment became more maneuverable, the decks started to get wider, reaching widths of 10 inches and over in the end, thus giving the skateboarder even more control. Banana board is a term used to describe skateboards made of polypropylene that were skinny, flexible, with ribs on the underside for structural support and very popular during the mid-1970s. They were available in myriad colors, bright yellow probably being the most memorable, hence the name.

Manufacturers started to experiment with more exotic composites and metals, like fiberglass and aluminum, but the common skateboards were made of maple plywood. The skateboarders took advantage of the improved handling of their skateboards and started inventing new tricks. Skateboarders, most notably Ty Page, Bruce Logan, Bobby Piercy, Kevin Reed, and the Z-Boys, started to skate the vertical walls of swimming pools that were left empty in the 1976 California drought. This started the vert trend in skateboarding. With increased control, vert skaters could skate faster and perform more dangerous tricks, such as slash grinds and frontside/backside airs. This caused liability concerns and increased insurance costs to skatepark owners,and the developement(first by Norcon,then more successfully by Rector) of improved knee pads that had a hard sliding cap and strong strapping proved to be too-little-too-late. During this era, the "freestyle" movement in skateboarding began to splinter off and develope into a much more specialised discipline,characterized by the development of a wide assortment of flat-ground tricks.

Skateparks increasingly had to contend with high-liability costs that led to many parks closing. Vert skaters therefore started making their own ramps and freestylers didn't need skateparks. Thus by the beginning of the 1980s, skateboarding had died again.

Third generation
The third skateboard generation, from the early/mid eighties to early nineties, was fueled by skateboard companies that were run by skateboarders. The focus was initially on vert ramp skateboarding. The invention of the no-hands aerial (later known as the ollie) by Alan Gelfand in Florida in 1976 [4] and the almost parallel development of the grabbed aerial by George Orton and Tony Alva in California had made it possible for skaters to perform airs on vertical ramps. While this wave of skateboarding was sparked by commercialized vert ramp skating, a majority of people who skateboarded during this period never rode vert ramps. Because most people couldn't afford to build vert ramps or didn't have access to nearby ramps, street skating gained popularity. Freestyle skating remained healthy throughout this period with pioneers such as Rodney Mullen inventing the basics of modern street skating; the flatground ollie, the ollie kickflip, the heelflip, and the 360 flip, to name a few. The influence freestyle had on street skating became apparent during the mid-eighties, but street skating was still performed on wide vert boards with short noses, slide rails, and large soft wheels. Skateboarding, however, evolved quickly in the late 1980s to accommodate the street skater. Since few skateparks were available to skaters at this time, street skating pushed skaters to seek out shopping centers and public and private property as their "spot" to skate. Public opposition, and the threat of lawsuits, forced businesses and property owners to ban skateboarding on their property. By 1992, only a small fraction of skateboarders remained as a highly technical version of street skating, combined with the decline of vert skating, produced a sport that lacked the mainstream appeal to attract new skaters.

Current generation

The fourth and current generation of skateboards is dominated by street skating. Most boards are about 7¼ to 8 inches wide and 30 to 32 inches long. The wheels are made of an extremely hard polyurethane, durometer (approximately 99a). As Steve Caballero had shown on vert in the mid-80's, very high durometers offer the benefit of reduced drag on hard surfaces which results in an overall faster ride, so long as one avoids rougher terrain. The wheel sizes are relatively small so that the boards are lighter,and the wheel's inertia is overcome quicker, thus making tricks more manageable. Today, modern wheels are currently around 48 to 60 mm in diameter and advances in technology have made them extremely light compared to the wheels of the eighties. Most decks are still constructed out of Canadian Maple, with 7-plies being the industry standard for strength and durability. Board styles have changed dramatically since the 1970s but have remained mostly alike since the mid 1990s. The contemporary shape of the skateboard is derived from the freestyle boards of the 1980s with a largely symmetrical shape and relatively narrow width. This form had become standard by 1992. During the 90s ramp or vert skateboarding dropped in popularity.

While street skateboarding remains popular, its rigid conformity and high attrition rate does not appeal to everyone, and there is a resurgence of other types of skateboarding brewing. Longboarding, speedboarding, downhill sliding, pool or bowl skating, slalom, and ditch skateboarding are thriving all over the world, albeit below the radar.

Hot Springs police placed an officer on administrative leave while they investigate an Internet video that appears to show him choking three skateboarders, the mayor said Tuesday.

Mayor Mike Bush said investigators talked with passers-by and business owners who saw Officer Joey Williams stop the skateboarders on a city sidewalk Thursday for breaking an ordinance banning skating in the area. A YouTube video posted Monday shows Williams apparently choking one of the youths after forcing him to the ground, while later chasing and wrestling two others while holding them in a headlock.

“Unfortunately, the video shows it pretty good,” Bush said. “I don’t condone that sort of stuff and I tell everybody that calls me, we don’t know where he was before and during and after this video.”

When asked about the officer’s conduct, Bush called Williams “one of 100 best and finest we’ve got” in the city’s police department.

The mayor declined to say what the city’s next step would be.

“Until the investigation is complete, we really don’t know what we’re going to do,” Bush said.

Williams did not answer a request through the department for an interview and did not respond to a phone message left at a home number in his name.

Police spokesman McCrary Means identified two of those arrested as Matthew Jon McCormack, 21, and Skylar Nalls, 19, both of Hot Springs. Means said McCormack faces a misdemeanor battery charge after purportedly pushing or striking a 67-year-old city employee during the melee. Nalls was cited for skateboarding and faces misdemeanor charges of fleeing and obstructing governmental operations.

Means said four youths involved in the incident also face skateboarding citations and resisting arrest charges.

McCormack, who works at Hot Springs’ Funbox Skateshop, said both he and Nalls were free on $1,000 bond. McCormack said most of the youths remained at home on house arrest.

“It’s never been an issue. They made that rule a long time ago, but I’ve skated down through there all the time and it’s never been a problem,” McCormack said. “It was kind of shocking for it to be such a huge issue.”

McCormack said skaters immediately started shooting the scene with a digital camera capable of shooting video and an Hi8 video camera. The YouTube video, spliced between the two cameras, shows the skaters along Hot Springs’ Central Avenue, home to eight bathhouses that figured prominently into the town’s popularity in the early 1900s.

Voices in the background can be heard asking Williams why he was arresting the skaters.

“When I tell you to stop and you tell everybody to keep going, that’s fleeing, that’s disorderly conduct, that’s a violation of city ordinance,” Williams is heard saying in the video.

Williams later threatened one of teens laying on the ground that he’d spray him with pepper spray if he moved.

McCormack disputed many of the police allegations, especially his battery charge. He said he only pulled on the city employee’s arm after the man picked a girl off her feet in a chokehold.

The video on YouTube had been viewed 30,000 times as of Tuesday afternoon.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. --A police officer who appears to choke a skateboarder and put two others in a headlock in a video posted online has been put on administrative leave while police investigate, officials said.

Hot Springs Mayor Mike Bush said Tuesday that investigators have talked with witnesses who saw the officer, Joey Williams, stop the skateboarders on a downtown city sidewalk last Thursday. Skateboarding is banned in the area.

The video shows Williams apparently choking one of the skateboarders after forcing him to the ground, then later chasing and wrestling two others while holding them in a headlock.

"Unfortunately, the video shows it pretty good," Bush said.

Bush said he won't be sure of the city's next step until the investigation is complete. The video, taken by Matthew Jon McCormack and another unidentified skater, was posted Monday on YouTube, a popular Internet site.

Williams can be heard threatening one person with pepper spray if he moved, and several voices are heard asking why they were being arrested. One person can be seen running from Williams, and Williams later tells them they are fleeing and acting disorderly.

Williams did not answer a request through the department for an interview and did not respond to a phone message left at a home number in his name.
